I particularly found Dr Ella's thoughts concerning the\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003einternational nature of God's covenant promises in the Old Testament\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ehelpful and refreshing. I enjoyed, too, his thoughts on how a singular\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eview of Jewish covenant applicability is too narrow.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eIt has struck me for a long time how frequently the Lord was pleased\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eto send the gospel outside of Israel's borders. Did not Joseph take the\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003egospel to Egypt? Naaman certainly carried the gospel back to Syria\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ewhere there was already at least one believer in Damascus, a little\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eservant girl who evangelised her peers. Mordecai and Esther's greatness\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ein the court of the Medes and Persians was immense and we are told\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003emany believed because of them. Daniel's influence was considerable in\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eBabylon and Nebuchadnezzar had wonderful revelations of God's\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eglory. The history of Balaam and Balak betrays a keen awareness\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eamongst surrounding nations of God's covenant dealings with His\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003epeople. These things were not hid. Jonah's testimony in Nineveh was\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003epowerful and if we may take the scripture testimony at face value, and\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ewe should, many, many believed God. This was a huge, huge city of\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eantiquity and the vast majority must surely have been Gentiles.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eWise men came from the east seeking the King of the Jews. Even\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ethe Lord's dealings with the Syrophenician woman who by the\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eSaviour's own testimony possessed great and genuine faith shows\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ecovenant grace was never restricted to a single race. She was a\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eCanaanite by birth and abode, but was truly one of the lost sheep of the\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ehouse of Israel whom the Lord had come to seek and to save. Gentiles\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eknew grace and were blessed in the Covenant of Peace long before the\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003egospel was sent more fully to the Gentiles in the great commission.\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eThis volume goes forth with the prayer and sure confidence that the\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003esame grace that always saved sinners by bringing them to a knowledge\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eof the truth will be instrumental in opening the eyes of God's elect till\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003ethe last lost sheep is gathered and the fulness of the truth as it is in Jesus\u003c\/p\u003e\u003cp\u003eis known the world over.
