A Survey of Presbyterian Mission History in Africa, Modern Beginnings (c.1940s to c 2020s) is the second volume on the history of Presbyterian mission endeavours in Africa. It follows on from an earlier volume on Historic Beginnings (c.1790s to c.1930s) and forms part of the Africa's Burning Bush Series. Both volumes were edited by Jack C Whytock. Volume Two gives a comprehensive survey of developments in the Presbyterian mission to Africa since World War 2. It narrates how the fracturing of global Presbyterianism produced renewed waves of missionary outreach, while historic Presbyterian churches focused more on building relationships and partnerships with existing churches in Africa. It also describes how the indigenous African Presbyterian churches pursued growing ministries in their own countries and established migrant churches abroad. The book contains a wealth of information, including maps, charts, pictures, and biographical sketches. Alongside Volume One (780 pages), Volume Two is an equally momentous work of 778 pages. The editor and his team of collaborators are to be acclaimed for a magnificent work. Both volumes are recommended to mission practitioners and administrators, theologians, theological institutions and students, and anybody who might be interested in church and mission history, especially focusing on Africa.
