Through his semi-autobiographical characters -- Shigeru Tomo and his alter ego, Samurai Shigeru -- Sam brought humor, heart, and the code of bushido (loyalty, honor, courage) to the story of a community that survived immigration, forced incarceration, and the long work of rebuilding.
