The earliest days of the Jesus People Movement involved Kent Philpott and a man we are calling Henry, as well as Lonnie Frisbee, Ted Wise, Danny Sands, and others. The diary sections of the book cover late 1968 into 1969, when the Summer of Love (1967) had deteriorated into a drug-induced nightmare.

Their main concerns were about the unhealthy states of the home and the church in America and how this contributed to the withdrawal of young people from family life and hometowns and onto the roads leading to San Francisco and the Haight-Ashbury district where there was sorcery, sex, and psychedelics-a desire to experience the supernatural-anything but real love. These concerns are expressed in essays with biblical references, as well as daily diary formats.

Kent, Henry, Oliver Heath, Paul Bryant, Jerry and Pat Westfall, and others were called in the name of Jesus to evangelize and minister to these lost folk. They provided food and shelter to many homeless and hopeless young people and were able to send many back home after receiving the love of God and hope for the future, often to ministries of their own.

The book is a compilation of personal history, diary, and essays.
