Transformed: The Big Bad Texas Prison Turnaround - Paperback

by Vance L. Drum (Author)

From America's Toughest Prison to a Model of Hope and Rehabilitation

Can prisoners truly change? Can prison culture become a force for good?

Once known as "America's Toughest Prison," Texas's Eastham Unit (now Wainwright) has become a place of transformation and hope. This remarkable shift grew from the shared commitment of influential visionaries: prison system leaders, wardens, chaplains, volunteers, and rehabilitated inmates who knew change was possible.

Through perseverance and collaboration, the old punitive model gave way to a safer, more constructive approach, one grounded in accountability, peer mentorship, and evidence-based rehabilitation. The result is a model now influencing correctional systems across the country.

In this compelling memoir, chaplain Vance Drum recounts four decades inside the Texas Department of Criminal Justice, revealing stories of struggle, resilience, faith, and redemption. These firsthand accounts show how lives and institutions can be transformed from the inside out, benefiting not only those incarcerated but society as a whole.
